What Japanese do I need to know?

TV (Japanese)

After an earthquake, almost all TVs will have an earthquake alert with a chime that you will learn to recognize and a couple sentences in Japanese about the epicenter, shindo, and possibility of tsunami. After you feel an earthquake, turn on your TV to get official, up-to-date information.

Earthquake alerts through your iPhone

Get disaster alerts from the Japan Meteorological Agency and the Japanese government straight to your iPhone by turning on emergency alerts (緊急速報 kinkyuu sokuhou) in Settings>Notification Center (or 設定>通知 if your phone is in Japanese). More info on the Apple website.

Yahoo (Japanese)

Yahoo's 防災速報 (bousai sokuhou) (Japanese) free for Android and iPhone, accessible if you know the kanji for your area and emergency phrases, sends alerts on earthquakes, evacuation orders, tsunami, heavy rain, volcano eruptions, and all kinds of severe weather right to your phone. For more detailed information, it will jump to Yahoo.co.jp.
If you're on a computer or don't have the app, you can go straight to Yahoo Weather earthquake page (Japanese) . It doesn't have alerts but does have shindo, magnitude, epicenter & tsunami warning information.
